Jonny lang a quitter never wins4/12/2023 ![]() Lang treated fans to several guitar changes throughout the evening, swapping among instruments including his custom Fender Telecaster Thinline, his Gibson 1958 Les Paul Standard reissue and his Martin J-40 acoustic. Opening at 7pm sharp with “Blew Up the House” from his latest release, 2013’s Fight For My Soul, Lang wowed the crowd with a potpourri of classics covering all of his albums including “Don’t Stop,” “Turn Around” and “That Great Day” from 2006’s release, Turn Around, “Lie to Me,” the jazz-infused “Rack ‘Em Up” and the Tinsley Ellis cover, “A Quitter Never Wins” off Lie To Me, “Red Light” and the Stevie Wonder classic, “Living For the City” from 2003’s Long Time Coming and “Angel of Mercy” and “Breakin’ Me” from Wander This World. Backed by guitarist Court Clement, bassist Andrew Perusi, drummer Barry Alexander and keyboardist Keith Rogers, the band pumped out an hour and forty minutes of gut-wrenching, blues-drenched soul to a house full of appreciative fans. With several more records released over the years, the Grammy-award winning artist brought his stellar show to the King Center, and church was indeed in session. He is one of the nicest, most genuine people in the music biz, and his passionate intensity for his craft is on full display during every concert. Over the years, I have had the privilege of attending, photographing and reviewing many of Lang’s emotionally powerful performances, including those with the Experience Hendrix tour, and I also have had the honor of meeting him. I had never heard of this young guitar phenom with the gritty, whiskey-soaked vocals of a seasoned bluesman, and I was absolutely blown away. My love affair with Jonny Lang’s music began way back in 1998 with the release of Wander This World, the follow-up to 1997’s critically acclaimed, hugely successful Lie To Me. ![]() Turn Around (2006) won the award ahead of nominated albums by Red, T-Bone, DecembeRadio, and Sarah Kelly.Jonny Lang King Center for the Performing Arts/Melbourne, FL The album was nominated for a Grammy award for the Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album (now split into Best Gospel Album and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album). Incredibly, it peaked at number one on the Billboard Christian Album. The album rose to number thirty-five on the Billboard 200 Album Chart. More success followed Jonny Lang after he released Turn Around (2006). He also featured a cover of “Dying to Live” by Edgar Winter in the album. While Jonny Lang’s songs were primarily featured blues elements, his next album, Long Time Coming (2003), added some Christian and R&B elements. Other albums that were nominated for the award that year included Live in Chicago (1999) by Luther Allison, Welcome to Little Milton (1999) by Little Milton, and Continental Drifter (1999) by Charlie Musselwhite. However, it lost to Take Your Shoes Off (1999) by Robert Cray. Wander This World (1998) was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2000. The album was also critically acclaimed, bringing Jonny Lang even more fame to his name and art. Jonny Lang was quick to release his studio album, Wander This World (1998), to build on the success that he had achieved with Lie to Me (1997). The album became quite popular, having Jonny Lang’s name become popular on the blues scene when he was just a teen. Within a year of being signed to the label, he released the album Lie to Me (1997). ![]() Through this, he caught the attention of A&M Records, who awarded him a recording contract having him meet other young artists such as Derek Trucks and Kenny Wayne Shepherd on the label. Jonny Lang was quite a sensation to watch on live shows. ![]() The band changed its name to Kid Jonny Lang & The Big Bang. Amazingly, young Jonny Lang joined the band, and its members saw it wise to rebrand their act.
